What annoys me most about all this spending claims is the New Labour style spin the anti Blackwell brigade put on it. OK, we spent more in total during the last 12 months than any Championship team .. Yes, that is a fact. BUT (And it's a blooy big but Rich) ... We were building a team from the bottom up. Reading spent a million on Leroy Lita and an undisclosed fee on Doyle, but already had Little, the ginger haired one and MOST of this seasons squad in place. Given that the team the year before had either reached the play offs or just missed out, then that was what they felt they needed to push on. Sheff Utd have spent 800,000 and (I think) 750,000 on Webber and Iffil plus a few other bargain buys and freebies to tweak another squad that was there or there abouts. This is one of the reasons I defended Blackwell, he WAS (Although I got sick of the "We only had two players" tag line VERY quickly ... and was pleased to see Bates publicly say just that after The Debacle) building a team and required more players than the others in order to create a team that would challenge. As with O'Dreary when he bought Johnson and Fowler, MY first seeds of doubt came when he spent so much on Hulse, Cresswell and Blake but sweet FA on a decent midfielder to feed the (Under and mis - used) strikeforce. Fact is, I think he should take a back seat now and let someone take control of the spending. But, if he IS going to start next season in charge then how, and on who, he spends what little money we may have is THE vital issue.
