Sorry but no beef. I still end up in a reboot loop with my WNDR3800.
I applied your two 4.4. patches manually to my sources.
As far as I could see from the LEDs, the router reboots before the failsafe
entrance point is reached. Behaviour looks similar as before your patches. (I
have been compiling and trying 4.4 monthly ever since nbd introduced 4.4
support for ar71xx initially and so far every attempt has been a reboot loop.)
Please send a boot log, I'll look into it as well.

Here you are. I attached a serial cable to my WNDR3800 and tested both lede
r222 kernel 4.1 build and the new kernel 4.4 build r231 + John's patches.
The 4.4 build reboots almost immediately after entering the preinit phase,
right after this line:
random: procd urandom read with 12 bits of entropy available
Otherwise, in addition to a line about devicetree, I do not notice any
significant difference in boot message shown to the serial console.
I will send the complete bootlogs to Felix and John off-list.
