Hallo Jānis In addition to gtkspell, you also need the python bindings to gtkspell. I think that might explain what you are seeing here. Virtaal is packaged for several systems already. Which distribution are you using where it isn't available? Or is the version for your system just old? Feel free to join the translate-devel mailing list that Michael pointed out.
