Charlie, Before you go nuts.
Remember, if a short appears on an extension, that block of 8 jacks will shut down as a protection. I have found the same problem with certain modems, fax machines, a 2500 telephone sets. This item short pins 1 & 4 on a RJ-14, so check all those items first before rewiring. Take a helper with you.
