The Panasonic door box, with a separate condenser mic and speaker, generally performs better than the Viking units I'v used, which use a 32 ohm speaker for both transmit and receive.
In some cases where we needed more volume, we used an alarm horn speaker (Elk SP-40) (www.elkproducts.com) to replace the Panasonic speaker. These are much more efficient, and more directional, and can provide more volume without any additional electronics- just clip out the speaker and connect the wires to the horn speaker instead, and point the horn at the user (if there is a doorway, mount the horn overhead and aim it down). Another option if you need even more volume is the Viking M2W Paging Amplifier, which also ties to the speaker leads.
