The company I worked for in southern Africa used retreads from Bandag.  The 
boss used them for all the planes, everything from 310's to DC-3's.  Never a 
problem and, thanks to their thickness, protected from mopane thorns (huge), 
termite mounds and whatever else might be lying in the weeds on the bush 
runways.  

None of us in the U.S. have to deal with mopane thorns but as pilots we love 
margins.  Extra range, altitude, good winds, etc.  Extra rubber.  Whether with 
tread or sidewalls, sturdy tires can save the day.
