Larry, Sounds like Frontier is not providing you what you want. GMail has one of the best spam filters, but some don't like the loss of privacy to Google's advertising platform. If best privacy is your thing, then go with ProtonMail. They are based in Switzerland (better privacy laws) and have a free account option for your level of usage. You can opt to not use the SaaS app (desktop and mobile) that both Google and Protonmail provides and always pull your mail to Thunderbird if you wish.
