Geday Tony Agreed but the point is the registration plate irrespective of an initial design or one built from another person's plans must allow unique reference to the construction so it can be traced. One aircraft, one unique plate. Without that plate evidencing bona vide construction details an insurer can rule the construction may be illegal and decline to insure the aircraft.
Also, picking up on Phil's point, I understand Gary Morgan did cross swords with Jeanette Rand over coprright violation and this may have been exacerbated when one of his aircraft was flown into a ferris wheel near Taree and the family concerned bought it before the courts. I reiterate my belief that to build from another person's plans without the approval of the copyright holder is fraught with danger in todays litigious world. The cost of legitimate plans is so small compared to total build and regulatory costs why would you do it. There are plenty of one off designs flying in Australia. An aircraft must have a data plate to be registered, and it's illegal to fly an unregistered aircraft (unless the regulator has granted explicit approval), but the data on the data plate (serial no, model designation, etc.) are largely up to the builder. I've never heard that flight without insurance is illegal in Oz either. Ill advised perhaps, but not illegal.
