On your 172 unless someone wired it wrong the 1 wire coming off the solinoid
is a ground wire. When the master is turned off everything but the clock
(unless it is a wind up) is off.

Every system has its plus and minus compared to any other system.  In my
case I run a fuel pressure regulator that precludes high fuel pressure
and turning off both ignition systems would cause such an immediate
effect that I doubt if your fingers would leave the switch before
turning it back on.  An exhaust backfire might not be too kind on your
exhaust pipes. We used to do that with the old pickup truck growing up
on the farm. Turn off the ignition, coast down the road, turn the
ignition back on for a backfire that sent the wildlife running.  Back
then turning off the ignition didn't lock up the steering wheel.  We
each go with what makes us comfortable and hope for the best.
