John,

I'm curious as to what factory built airplane you have that has no gravity feed and a "single" fuel pump system with no backup. Many "factory" built airplanes with no gravity feed use an engine driven pump with an electric pump backup.

I switch tanks and pumps every 15 to 20 minutes (only at altitude) and if a pump quits it's engine out in about 10 seconds.  I use both for T.O. and climb and both for letdown and landing.  If one of my pumps quits at altitude I have backup in about 2 seconds. Those Facut pumps see to be quite reliable.  800 hours of random use with no problem.

Someone mentioned the lack of talk about a "belly tank".  I'm guessing the reason is why add a big draggy belly tank when you can carry fuel internal in the wing with no additional drag other than the lift generated to carry the load.
