I have installed and worked with a number of ADS-B units. My planes currently have Skyguard units, which currently run roughly $1300 per unit, or $1200 per unit for Out Only. I can't recommend them any more. I have had 5 years worth of problems with them. I had so many problems and did so much R&D and flight testing for the manufacturer that he gave me a second unit just for my troubles.
The 1090-ES units that are part of a new transponder installation typically work best. It's hard to go wrong with Garmin... but it's also hard to afford them. They cost a lot of $$. Any transponder solution is typically going to start around $3500 and up. The reason I posted the recommendation for the uAvionix Echo-UAT unit is that I just finished the installation of a uAvionix TailBeacon TSO unit and am impressed with the uAvionix units. They are simple, and they work. The current package sale on the unit puts it at $1399 complete. With free shipping, that's your price and you install it yourself. I bought it using my EAA credit card which dropped the price with the discount to $1329 with everything included. I don't think you will find another complete in and out solution for that price... and the uAvionics stuff actually works. I always used to go by the big sky theory. Figured the chances of a mid-air in the remote areas I flew in NM were pretty remote. Then one day at 10,500' in the middle of nowhere, I got a very close up look at a Piper Arrow while I maneuvered hard enough miss it that I launched everything in the cockpit into the top of the canopy. Close call. I only had a second or two to react to miss him, and I don't think he ever saw me. So yeah, I kind of view it as a big bonus to know where the traffic is around me, and for them to be able to see what I'm at. I rarely fly in class C & D airspace any more, and aptly demonstrated how rusty I am with ATC yesterday while at a Class C airport. Sounds like you have your head cut in, and I'm not likely to convince you otherwise. It's legal for you to fly without, so do so if that's your choice. I posted the information for those that are interested or need to equip. FWIW, I used to fly the west side of the Cascades based out of Toledo, WA. There's a lot more traffic running up and down the west side than you think. -Jeff Scott --------------------------- > Sent: Monday, October 28, 2019 at 7:41 PM > From: "Samuel Spanovich via KRnet" <krnet@list.krnet.org> > To: krnet@list.krnet.org > Cc: "Samuel Spanovich" <spanovich...@gmail.com> > Subject: KR> ADS-B opinions/recommendations > > I dreaded this moment (Jan 1st, 2020) when I purchased my airplane almost 18 > months ago, but fortunately the mandate did not stop me from becoming a KR > owner.
