I dreaded this moment (Jan 1st, 2020) when I purchased my airplane almost 18
months ago, but fortunately the mandate did not stop me from becoming a KR
owner. Now, with the deadline approaching, I’m just looking for some opinions
out there on adding ADS-B out.

Here’s where I stand; I do not take many long trips in the KR, and when I do,
they are generally not in the areas where Mode C is required. I think I can
count on one hand the number of times I’ve flown into class C in the KR2S, and
I’ve only ever flown in class B once and it was in a Cessna 172 with two other
pilots on board. Only one time have I flown the KR2S above 10k feet, mostly
due to curiosity of how high I could get near gross on a 90F day (in short, it
was about 11k MSL), while also putting as much room between me and the Cascade
mountains as the plane would let me. And finally, as for the Mode C Veils
(30NM from Class B airports), I’m willing to change my routing a little bit and
avoid these areas, if it means saving some money.

Everybody’s situation is different, but for me personally, unless I’m missing
the big picture of the mandate, given my current situation, I don’t see a
reason to follow through with the mandate, especially in a small aircraft like
the KR2S. I understand it’s almost a minimum of $1500-2000 to add just the
“out” option. That’s a fair amount of green for such an affordable aircraft,
for something that I will very rarely, if ever, truly “need” on board.

If it’s not too much to ask, for those of you out there with the ADS-B
equipment installed, would you mind sharing what brand you went with, and a
rough estimate of what it cost? I have looked on several different websites
and the cheapest “out” options I’ve found are around $1500-2000. If there was
an option that was in the $500-$1000 range, I would probably reconsider and
make it a Xmas present.

Any input (as always) is greatly appreciated!

Sam
