"an alternative exit (through the canopy or fuselage with an axe?) "

Like a lot of KR's my canopy hinges to the front with air struts for support. I
would argue that this is just about the best way to get in and out of a KR in
the normal position. Once you have flipped over onto your back all bets are
off. I don't know of any design that will work in that orientation and more
than likely any kind of rails or other mechanism is probably going to be
damaged from the crash. This is why I have a small Friskars hatchet that I am
pretty sure I got at the Depot. It is only about 12" long with a plastic handle
and small head. It weighs less than two pounds and is razor sharp. It came with
its own mounting bracket and I have it bolted flat to the cockpit floor just in
front of the main spar between my legs. I can easily reach it and by just
grabbing the handle you can pry it out of its holder. I have often thought that
if that bad day ever comes I would start with the wood fuselage and then move
to the canopy if needed.
