few cheap ways to get OUT."

If you're not limited to Garmin (their systems are closed and don't allow
us to mix and match if Garmin equipment is involved). so . . . if you're
not using Garmin anywhere in your ADS-B system, consider Uavionix product
called a "echo UAT".

https://uavionix.com/products/echo-uat/

Same company that makes the Skybeacon and Tailbeacon.

I',m not considering the Tailbeacon since I don't want to leave my nav
lights on all the time. I suppose I could easily rig a separate run of
wires to the Tailbeacon, with its own switch, but that would still leave
me in the same situation Confused is in . . . no ADS-B IN.

So, I'm leaning towards the echo UAT. Like the GDL-82, it lets you
continue to use your existing transponder. It provides ADS-B IN via
wireless to just about all of the nav programs, except for Garmin.

I've been planning on upgrading my Anywheremap ATC to the Garmin 660 for
a long time so I'm trying to work around that. Which is hard to do,
mainly because the 660 will only accept ADS-B signals from a Garmin
receiver. Granted, a GDL-39 can be bought used for less than $500 on
eBay, so that would solve the ADS-B IN solution, plus let me keep the
Area 660 I've had my heart set on for so long. On top of that though,
I'd still need to buy an ADS-B OUT solution that uses my existing
transponder. Which means a GDL-82 I guess.

Not the cheapest way to go about this . . . it would end up costing about
2K or a little more when including the cost of the Garmin Aera 660.

If I'm willing to use one of the small tablets (the 660 is a 5 inch
screen diaganally so is a very close size to my ATC.) I don't know of
any small, sunlight-readable tablets that have a five inch screen . . .
not yet anyway. Still looking. There are phones that can be used as
tablets that "might" fit the bill, but I don't think so. The supposedly
bright-screen phones have a very limited time running full bright without
automatically dimming down. They probably have other quirks as well,
thus unless I can find a small tablet that's as bright as the 660, I'll
probably have to stick with it plus one of the Garmin receivers - the
GDL-39 being the cheapest if bought used on eBay.

Re the Garmin Aera 660, having a unit totally dedicated to aviation
functions seems to be conducive to more reliability, but that may just be
in my head. People seem to be using iPads for their navigators without
problems . . . but iPad and Foreflight have been working together for so
long that they have their own "closed system" that seems to work well.
I'm not considering buying an iPad for anything however, so that's out.

I've no experience with anything other than my ATC and the Lowrance 600C
before that. If anyone knows of a small Android tablet with a super
bright 5 inch screen, please let me know. If one is found, I'd just use
the Uavionix echo OUT unit since it would transmit to the tablet giving
me weather and traffic, in addition to satisfying the OUT requirement
using my existing KT-76A + encoder.

Uavionix (and other companies) make very small ADS-B OUT units for sUAS
(drones) so I'd bet somebody could easily hack one of these to serve
Experimental aircraft purposes. The drone ADS-B OUT units are a lot
cheaper (I think) than the ones for planes. Somebody is bound to do
this, if they haven't already . . . . (see attached picture)
