Craig. Your idle should be set at appx 800 rpm. It is difficult to get mixture to kill engine at idle. The Ellison is actually smoother at idle with some leaning and the same goes when running in the 1000 - 1500 range. Go full rich on take off and then lean accordingly. That engine is not the original that was installed in 2005. The engine you have in the plane was short block and bearing built by Roy Szarafinski and the heads built by Mark at Falcon. That engine is no where near needing a rebuild. You need to read the log books to find the exact install date and determine the actual hours on that engine. That engine was in prime flight condition when you acquired it. It should be flight ready unless you made major changes that would affect its performance.
