New aftermarket Waterboxer heads are available, ~$400 each.
The downside of those heads is that the combustion chamber is in the
pistons. Requires special pistons. The basic waterboxer is a type 1
design so there are a lot of crossover dimensions, so an experienced VW
engine guy could make it work. I did some research on that and decided
it was not for me.

Can you even buy these heads anymore? The GPASC website says "PLEASE
NOTE: These heads are no longer available!". And clicking on the
"additional information and pricing" link is a dead end. If that's
true, that would be another reason not to go down that road....
