We have a "KR Builders and Pilots Forum" every year at OSH, and it's published in the EAA forum schedule a month in advance. I'd say the average number of new "KR tire-kickers" that show up is probably three, so I'm not convinced there's a ground-swell of potential KR builders there.

Oshkosh is just plain too big, in every way. Everything is spread so far apart, I'm just about worn out after two or three days of simply walking around between places of interest. Shade can be difficult to find, and camping and hotels cost a fortune. Finding a place to do the usual four or five forums would be problematic as well. To me, logistics is the number one reason not to hold a Gathering at OSH.

And as John mentioned, there are just too many distractions. The beauty of the KR Gathering is that it's "all KRs, nothing but KRs". You have a concentration of builders and pilots that I don't think you'd have anywhere else, even SNF or OSH, not to mention the airplanes. If you've never attended a KR Gathering, I'd say that you simply don't know what you're missing, and are not qualified to criticize the current arrangement.

I don't think having the Gathering at MVN every-other year should be carved in stone, either. I think what we agreed to is that we'd "try" to have it at MVN every other year, but historically the next year's Gathering location is decided at the Gathering Banquet. Talking it out on KRnet is a good way to get a consensus, but the vote that counts is at the Banquet. I've not heard anybody volunteer to host it next year, so if somebody throws out MVN at the Banquet then it'll likely be a shoe-in, but somebody's got to pitch it, and volunteer to be the host and organizer. I think we all agree that MVN is just about perfect, but we'll never know if there's an even better place if we don't keep moving the Gathering around to find it!

I really enjoyed driving and flying to new places across the country, and would like to see that continue to the extent that folks volunteer to host it. If there are no takers, MVN is fine too...
