Greg, I have a stock width KR2S (36") and would agree it's a little tight for 2 people. You need to be really good friends to fly in a KR2!
Having said that, if you widen the fuselage you will not be able to use the pre- made turtledeck parts from Steve Glover ( Rand top deck kit) without some serious modification as they do not stretch at all. If you are going to scratch build everything then I would go with at least 4 inches wider for comfort. You will be glad you did.
