20 to start and adding 10 sound reasonable.  Be sure to check the stall
characteristics as you go up in weight.  Sand bags will work.  I am
fortunate to have a bunch of bags of lead shot at our glider club.  We have
two that are 30 pounds each that are big and flat and designed to go under
the seat cushion and we have several others that are not flat, but they have
handles sewed in so they are easy to secure.

passanger in the plane when I had it on the scales and it was within limits.
