Gee, that sounds almost like starting my engine on the Magneto cause it has
impulse coupling (spark retard), and running it on that and the electronic,
which is fixed. Now, if I loose the magneto, I wonder what will happen.
Maybe next time I am up flying, I will turn off the Magneto and see, Oh
shucks, I already did that, and it still works.

Which reminds me. Several years ago, there was a lot of discussion about
whether or not the engine will maintain full power, with the facet fuel
pumps turned off. Well, with 3/4 of a stock header tank full, it will.

make it start easy is with something like an impulse coupling.

but once you have gone through all the trouble of making something that
works and is reliable you might as well just have gone with a regular
aircraft magneto.

I guess that something like an electronic ignition with spark advance for
normal use and for starting with a quick and dirty lawnmower type set with
fixed timing for a backup
