It is true that this would decrease the amount of dihedral,  but only for 
the length of the increased center spar width.   This would give more space 
for a larger fuel tank  in the strongest area of the aircraft.  Of course 
there is something to be said for having all the fuel in the outer wings in 
the event of a crash.
