Besides the things that Daniel has stated, there are other issues with the 
VW that require the valves to need adjustment.  The one that comes to mind 
is the stretching of the valves.  As a safety measure, It might be wise to 
take the valves out and measure them for stretch.  If the engine was 
subjected to overheating, stretching could have taken place.  Excessive 
stretching leads to valve failure.
