I'm responding only because I see the difference.  And the fixed gear makes
sence.  And that is exactly why I like the KR's so much, and the
Experimental designation so well.  That's why you'll see both fixed gear and
retracts on these planes.

I believe that the design I have made for the gear and the ClamShell's will
make the gear easy to build and the speed increase.  And yes, it will
without question be heavier than the fixed.  And the time will increase by
about 20 to 25 hrs.  But....................................................
and I just like the looks of the retract.
