The alternative for you, without to use another distro, is to use the AppImage digiKam bundle which will be release with next 5.3.0. Currently it's in beta stage, for testing. If you want to be able to use it with SD card reader, you need to accept the desktop integration question at first run. I tested here with an old CentOS 6.8 with Gnome, and it's work fine.
