well.. from my perspective there is not really a difference. But: the term Feature is used in GIS terminology for Geographic Objects on the one hand. On the other hand, Feature is used also in terms of "property" in everyday English (and in particular in computer science) - i.e. it does not refer to an object but to a property of an object. Item is - for me - "one object"
