Well, that's definitely part of it, because I think the laws are largely
ineffective due to the larger problems of social views. Many human beings
tend to take the path of least resistance. I think that women see the
obstacles that they will have to face in working with computers even if they
are competent at it, and this sways their decision to work in other, more
traditional fields. Not everyone wants to be a pioneer and who wants to be
stared at.

Go to most computer departments and count the number of women and you will
see we still have a long way to go. Computing is still a guy's club and
most women I know, myself included, still feel they have to break in and
show themselves comptetent.

Plus, I think a lot of women are put off by the technical lingo when they
start and need to learn that the concepts are simple. Maybe it's an
educational problem then.

I chose literature instead of the sciences because it was beautiful to me.
I could have gone either way. And now I do. Being a mother of two now,
though, I have far less time to play. I have a 4 year old and a 6 month old
that I am still nursing and I do a much larger part of the child care and
housework than my husband does. Why? I'll have to think more about that
when I have more time. Maybe I do it faster, more efficiently, maybe some
part of me doesn't trust that he will be able to take care of my daughters
effectively. He is a good father and husband. He just doesn't seem to
think about some things and tends to play around with stuff a lot more than
me. That is how he has become so proficient in his field.
