IMHO, 1992. Paul Tsongas, though he was out of the running by the time my
state's primaries came around. Prior to that, probably 1980. John Anderson
was the last candidate I voted for rather than against.

It has a lot to do with it. I suspect one of the reasons Colin Powell never
ran was because of the fact that it would have made him a huge target. I
also suspect he could have been elected.

Oriental is an offensive term.
John F. Kennedy, who barely won the Presidency over Richard Nixon in 1960,
had to overcome a whole lot of anti Catholic bigotry. I suspect it would be
far worse for a minority or female candidate even today.
