There are federal grants to cover the cost of patents, and they aren't
*that* expensive. He's looked into the patent idea and consulted with a
couple of people in the college of business.
It's an original idea, not an "open" repetition of something that he
learned in class.
Also, school in Finland (where the lucrative OS in question began) is
free, so the allegory doesn't *quite* fit the situation :o)
