I think that depends on what kind of relationship you had with your
parents ;o) I never had that "rite of passage" type feel, while my
husband surely did. And his parents weren't too happy... part of it was
a person he was keeping inside until he "got out" and part of it was the
"wait a minute... I'm on my own! Let's party!!" phenomenon.

Some guy brought his computer in to get configured for "the internet" at
work, complete with naked porn star login screen background (windows98
machine) and a little program that had a stripper come out of the bottom
right corner of the screen and walk along the taskbar... every now and
then she brought out props. The guy blamed it on his roommate ;o)

I do think that that is one of the toughest things for people to deal
with when they get to college: the freedom... and then it has high
potential to become "what mommy and daddy said no to all those years
before I got here".

I have a friend who is in her third year at the University of
Washington, but still living with her parents... she still has a
curfew-ish thing that she gets a talkin-to if she doesn't abide by (at
least roughly, they must be more leneant than they used to). Compare
that to your average Joe living where I live (the notorious party
apartment complex) and you've got the extremes.

I am sure I would have a more complete thought on that but it's
in-law-visiting-time... ;o)
