As a late-teen (16-20ish), I used preconceptions for my own purposes, and 
did my share of overturning them.

I was in the SF-gamers community. I'm damn good at wargaming. I'd come with
a friend, get mistaken for their girlfriend, and would go up to a group
starting a wargame and ask if they could teach me to play.

I didn't often win (unfamiliar with the game they happened to be playing, 
usually), but I ALWAYS surprised them. It was fun.

And it was empowering. And earned me my place. Annoying to have to earn it,
yes, but .. hey. That's life.
