I may be wrong since I don't play those games but it seems to me there's understandable lack of interest technologically. When quake3 was GPL'ed it was exciting since it was done relatively early. The next exciting thing would be to have doom3 released relatively early. But now not even doom3 is released, it's getting late, and these two here are essentially quake3 with minor improvements. Then id software goes and gets acquired by an unknown publisher that nobody firmly believes it's good for it and you get the point.
