PEAR has a place in a middle ground of users. Many users are living in
the protection of the likes of wordpress and so on where they 'package'
extras. Others access all of the packages via a Linux package manager,
but when one moves to windows installs, the PEAR modules come via that
install path which normally can be relied on. Since PHP only has PEAR as
a means of adding those elements as well as additional PECL modules at
this time how would YOU propose to replace it? I don't see 'pickle' as a
viable alternative unless it's planned to fully bundle that in place of
PEAR? PEAR is used to add private packages to installs without having to
worry about what the machine is running.
