Well, the debate has turned interesting, with very experienced inputs from
Ambar Roy. I had started investigating about Python, by the time other
comments were coming in. I do feel that we have a large community of
programmers in Java than any of Perl / Python / Scheme / PHP / TCl and the
likes. Fortunately, Python and Java are good partners, with Python described
as a "glue" language. See http://www.python.org/doc/Comparisons.html for
several articles comparing Python with Perl and Java.

I would like to recommend all to read, (specifically to Raju Mathur), an
excellent article on the subject by Eric S Raymond:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=3882

In summary, it appears to me that (a) You must know Perl, a mandatory
requirement (b) Knowledge of Java is preferred and (c) Python to be your
default language ( There is some tk stuff for doing GUIs)

Comments??
