Although I was a first timer at the meet but I do share some of your views. 
I'd rather suggest this ...

The frequency of LUG meets be increased and also the duration, and 
each meet should be on a particular theme so that only interested ppl be 
present. 

This should also give "enterpreneurs" an opportunity to invite even 
Non-Linux users to their presentations and attract more ppl towards using 
Linux eventually ... whereas ... the techies can be present for purely 
technical discussions uninterrupted ... of-course other ppl can be present 
too but the focus shall remain on just one particular topic rather than 
mixing up everything.
