Here is what I did for the cable operator in Vasant Vihar. First of all to
complicate the issue I told him I don't have a PC but I have a router
instead (Dlink DL707), so neither an RPM nor an EXE would work for me. It
had to be a login free account. He hummed and hawed and then relented. The
software he was using for subscriber management was 24Online (which
incidently is based on Linux, runs on a Linux box and has a Windows
client, not sure about the linux client though).
Now though he did not want to tell, he was forced to was reveal the fact
that a login free account does exist. All he had to do was put in the IP
address assigned to my router in a section where he had other firewall
rules and allow packets to and from that IP. The reason they don't talk
about it, well once he puts an IP in there he has no control over it. He
can't choke your bandwidth and he can't monitor you ;) its a hilarious
story and I can tell you all about it if and when we have the next
meeting!
