ambiguous names are of course quite useful and even essential in certain
contexts, but they are not suitable for all purposes.
for hosts, applications and routers that are communicating over a network
it is immensely useful to have reasonably stable and unambiguous names
for points of attachment to that network. there are many useful functions
that cannot be accomplished in the absence of such names.
