Obviously open source is huge. I think what attracts enterprise customers is not the availability of source* per se but the fact that you can start for free and decouple growth and cost. How many companies would be running Linux today if you had to pay $10,000 for your first license? And running more copies or more MIPS of Linux does not directly increase your software costs -- that is very attractive: it decouples technology ("spin up another Linux instance, would you?") from budgets.
*Am I wrong? Those of you who work for conventional "enterprises" (not consultants, hobbyists or vendors) -- do you see your company seriously utilize the source code of the open source products you are using? Are you examining the source to find problems? Are you making local modifications? I would assert it is not the availability of the source code that is driving Linux adoption, it is the two factors I name above. Making exits available that obviate the need for local modifications and making parameters available that obviate the need for exits are desired even by those who hate OCO, and do not imply taking away the exits or the source code. -- Shmuel (Seymour J.) I was referring to the OP's "Is there a ... free alternative emulator ...?" Frankly I don't think I have seen any resistance to OCO in twenty years, other than on this list. Many, many customers nowadays would not know what to do with a piece of assembler source if you gave it to them. Customers are pressing to have exits go away. In other words, they *want* local customization to be parameters plus object code, not source code. My preference is for well maintained software to which I can easily make local changes. If I have to pay a reasonable license fee and can only provide my changes to people who are licensed, that's fine. Are you actually seeing resistance to priced software, or only to OCO software? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
