The first question to ask is do you have any zIIP processors ? This makes a big difference if you are planning to run java of any flavor. It will depend on whether you have the JDK or JRE versions of java on how easy it is to do development natively on the mainframe

I have java 8 (both 31 bit and 64 bit) as well as java 11 and 17 on the mainframe - the parts that are "no additional cost" with z/OS 3.1. Is this all I need to develop java applications on the MF or are there additional java compilers or other pieces that I would need to purchase to make this a viable option? At this point the only java we use is what IBM ships ( like SCRT).
