Hi, there are some good manuals "Setting Up a sysplex" and "Planning Global 
Resource Initialisation" which guides you through the things to do.
Nowadays IBM doesn't recommend ring anymore.

BUT be aware that you should really think in advance that this is what you want 
to do for getting the while-open functionality to work.
Implementing a sysplex between multiple systems for solely the purpose of the 
while-open functionality is questionable....

Setting up GRS can be a tedious task and it all depends on your naming 
conventions.
It will not be a walk in the park if you have the same naming conventions 
without sharing the DASD in the different LPARS.
