Not really. While adding a native database dimension field would require
core changes, the layout engine constraints and alternatives for rendering
structural changes are discussed extensively in
https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/pull/1617 . As shown there, the Scheme
report engine can be extended without altering the core C database
architecture by leveraging filter lext, and furthermore it's
multidimensional.

Two custom reports already directly support text filtering functionality:
1. Matrix - GnuCash AccountByFilter -

2. Group account data rows by filter text patterns -
https://github.com/dawansv/gnucash-custom-reports#examples

In my opinion the big thing holding it back is the transaction report has
become too unmanageable to add text filter sorting and grouping:

Btw, I've changed my position on the transaction report being limited by
sorting account types. While it fails when using short Account Names, it
works perfectly when using Full Account Names. As a practical workaround
today, the report can be opened in a spreadsheet, where an AI can easily
generate a macro to add the missing leaf accounts and account subtotals to
the exported data.
