Struggled once also with a grub problem, and there was a thing that solved

If my grub.conf was like this, :

title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.11-r8 (+fb +splash -agpart +sata)
        root (hd0,1)
        kernel=/kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r8 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr splash=verbose
        initrd=/initrd-gentoo-highquality-1280x1024

Grub would also show the boot menu and when I choose Gentoo, I was looking
at the console with:
Booting Gentoo
root (hd0,1)

Once I removed the root (hd0,1) line, grub booted gentoo like nothing ever happend.
And afterwards I forgot about it complety untill this thread shows up.

I Think it's worth a try.

Remove the "root (hd0,1)" line.  That should (I hope) let you boot
gentoo from the floppy.

I have plenty of common sense,
I just choose to ignore it.
