Why is it called "donating" when it is actually purchasing?

Hi Dark,

Unfortunately, what you say is true. When Sryth started out as a free
gamebook RPg adventure system I really enjoyed it because everything
seemed well balanced and you could progress without constantly
donating to get better weapons and skills. I still enjoy the game, but
there is a definite lean towards commercialization these days where
you simply can't progress beyond a certain point unless you donate to
level up your skills or obtain the better weapons and armor. Plus
these days it seems there more and more areas where a person can do
some grinding against the same enemies instead of actual adventures
which isn't my thing either. Still, for what it is Sryth is a good
concept and something I've often thought about emulating in my own
text adventure system since some of the good elements still remain
despite the authors insistence on commercializing the project these
days.

The game has a nice accessible interface, the stats system works well,
and the dice rolling adds a definite sense of randomness to the game
that you wouldn't get from classic interactive fiction. About the
only thing I could see improving from Sryth is the combat system is
too limited. Its usually pretty simplistic like "you swing your sword
and do x damage." I could see adding some attacks that strike certain
body parts such as hands, arms, legs, torso, etc which would do
specific damage to certain areas. If you could target specific body
parts and they were unprotected it would not only be more realistic
but could make certain combats go much quicker. After all, smacking an
enemy upside the head with a club when its head was unprotected would
kill or knock the enemy unconscious much quicker than aiming for an
armored torso. Sryth just doesn't offer this degree of combat strategy
which is something I'd like to see in more text adventure systems.

While I favour Tom in terms of if, I must confess I agree on Sryth.

I was there from the start back in 2004 before there even was! an
adventurers guild, and originally loved the system, but as time went on the

gm just seemed to get greedy, as he started inroducing more and more stuff that was too strong for weaponry and skills in the game and you needed the
weapons that took paid to acquire tocans to get to beat.

As the game went on, the paid weapons became stronger and stronger and more

and more expensive, and that seemed the only way to get through much of the

games' new content, which frankly i just found a cheat, hence why I quit
sryth in 2010, I even sent the gm a mail about this but he never
respondedd.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.
