It appears nu_estimate_np_and_em crashes only when processing the data when it 
resides on a mounted drive. And runs to completion when the subjects dir is on 
the same file system as the virtual machine. That is an mni tool and I can not 
fully explain that behavior. It might be worth posting a question to the minc 
support list:
