I'm using freesurfer version:

 freesurfer-Linux-centos6_x86_64-stable-pub-v5.3.0

I'm not sure how to check the version of tksurfer specifically?

you would need to include parameters, but that doesn't explain your error.
What version of tksurfer are you using? It is probably too old
