you have to tell the symbolic link where to put the directory

copy this exactly into your terminal, including the period at the end

SUBJECTS_DIR=/mnt/hgfs/DBSI/volumetric/MGZ
cd $SUBJECTS_DIR
ln -s $FREESURFER_HOME/subjects/fsaverage .
