What's your point?

You are on an expedition into 1980's computing experience, both software and 
hardware. 

And software wasn't made (significant) better unless it was allowed to use more 
hardware,
as in faster CPU's and more memory.

That includes (on this DOS list) the availablity of ~600KB memory, and (later) 
some 
2 MB RAM. More obviously better.

FreeDOS kernel+command.com should work fine for anything >= 2MB.
For less, use something else.

BTW: for machines without XMS, SVARDOS command is definitively the better 
choice and should
be the default install option for FreeDOS 1.whatever. 

 
If you want to get the 1980 feeling, get used to EDLIN. Or buy a real useful 
editor.
