The attached patch modifies the pkg_install
tools to inspect the file contents--rather than the
filename extension--to determine the
compression method in use.

Oh, bloody hell. I overlooked 'pkg_add -r', too, didn't I?
Shouldn't take too long to add the auto-detect logic to the remote fetch handling, as well. <sigh>
