Cool. I ran into problems that would have been solved by this when trying to put together some of the RC snapshots for both 4.7 and 5.0 (it sucked to put together a test release and package split only to discover that none of it worked). I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to look at your diff in detail (or if there might be other people planning on reviewing this) but I'm definitely interested in seeing the functionality. Thanks!
