Maybe a "volatile" intrinsic, just like we already have an "unaligned" intrinsic, would indeed be a better idea than adding the possibility to mark data as volatile. As an extra plus, it would map directly onto LLVM :) (which also only supports "volatile" as an attribute for load/store instructions).
