That is true, but only thanks to the major bump. Otherwise, we may have
thousands of simple distro users who taks the responsibility to install
FFmpeg as shared libraries in /usr/local/, making all the distro application
using it.

I have no idea if that use case is frequent or not, but neither does Ronald.

And by the way, if we decide to drop ABI compatibility, the mature thing to
do would be to avoid the SONAME conflict by changing the naming scheme.
